Bushwick Revealed House
When an artist and designer couple and their two children purchased a 1915 wood-framed two-family home in Bushwick, it had already been loved throughout its life. They were looking for a cost-effective renovation that preserved and restored the historical elements.
The renovation uses as much of the existing building elements as possible, with healthy, resilient materials when additions were needed. This comfortable interior is adorned with their beloved art collection among the historic details; the two playing off each other to create a mended whole.
Due to the careful nature of this renovation, the process was surgical and intentional. CO Adaptive and the contracting team worked closely together to adapt the design as historic details were uncovered during the construction phase.
The home’s existing doors were carefully catalogued and used within the new layout. New fluted glazing was inserted into old doors and new hardware is mixed with older elements.
We used only natural insulations on this project—including mineral wool in existing wall cavities, and blown-in cellulose within the existing roof cavity. Existing subfloors remained intact throughout, as did a majority of the existing framing.
Only a select number of new wood doors were purchased and trimwork throughout was sanded and kept whenever possible. The result is a careful, carbon conscious, and material-efficient renovation that updates this beautiful building to the lives of the new owners.
