SPARC / Deconstruction Initiative / Glazed Block For Resale
Contact us directly or visit Orbit Exchange Marketplace for more information on how to purchase the deconstructed glazed block
We recently deconstructed portions of the 1954-built Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing in Manhattan, the first public project to follow the NYC Economic Development Corporation’s Circular Design and Construction Guidelines for reducing waste and embodied carbon in the built environment. Once deconstructed (and demolished), the site will be the future home of SPARC (Science Park and Research Campus).
Deconstruction describes the process of carefully taking apart portions of buildings or removing their contents with the primary goal of reuse in mind. Demolition, in contrast, is the more standard process under which buildings are either knocked down or gut renovated, and all materials are taken to landfill.
We carefully removed glazed ceramic block, wood paneling, and auditorium seating, and are connecting, or have already connected these materials with designers to specify into upcoming projects. This project took hard work, and we are thankful to everyone involved in our ongoing efforts to reuse and share access to deconstructed material whenever possible.
The acoustic wood panelling has already found its way into four restaurants and music venues around the city. The auditorium seating has also found a new home.
The glazed ceramic block we removed and stored is available for sale, in two colors and a range of sizes. Please contact us if you are interested in including this beautiful material in an upcoming project. Download brochures below for more information.
